Seasonal Guide to Skin Care

Spring

By all accounts, spring is kinder to your skin as the harsh extremities of winter will give way to milder more refreshing days.

Dry to Normal Skin

Spring will generally be less demanding on you skin and as a result you may find that you can begin to reduce the number of times you apply moisturiser; or you may benefit by switching to a lighter moisturiser.

Oily and Combination

The milder climate will alleviate much of the dry and oily fluctuations experienced during winter. There is no need to change your routine, skin maintenance will just be that little bit easier.

Summer

English summers can be a torrid affair, protection is crucial.

Dry to Normal Skin

Use a moisturiser with added SPF to protect your face from the harmful effects of the sun's rays. Increase your daily intake of water; this will help both your body and your skin. For those in air conditioned offices, make sure you apply water-based moisturisers when necessary to prevent your skin from drying out.

Oily and Combination

A daily moisturiser with added SPF is essential; be sure to choose a non-oily water-based product to suit your skin type. If your face is feeling a little clammy and/or greasy during the day, take a moment to wash your face with cool water to refresh. If exercising, be sure to shower and cleanse your face fully afterwards in order to avoid sweat-induced breakouts. Finally, increase your daily intake of water; this will help both your body and your skin.

Autumn

After the sun, here comes the rain! With the colder climate unable to hold as much water it will require more moisture from your skin.

Dry to Normal Skin

If you find that your skin is feeling drier than normal it may be time to consider re-applying a moisturiser as part of your morning routine (after shaving). Leave 5 - 10 minutes to ensure the moisturiser has been fully absorbed before re-applying.

Normal to Oily

If you are using an astringent and find that you skin is becoming dry and too taught as a result you may benefit by skipping this stage and switch to just a non-alcohol based toner. If your skin requires extra moisture, use a light formula and avoid the T-zone.

Combination

This is the time of the year to begin to be aware of and look after dry patches, pay particular attention to the cheeks and under the eyes.

Winter

Your skin will need to be protected from the extremities of winter, the wind and the cold. Do not forget your lips and hands.

All Skin Types

Be aware that showering more than once a day (excluding after exercise) can lead to dry patches. Applying a body lotion after washing will help to replenish moisture levels.

Dry

Switching to a thicker moisturiser and/or re-applying should help to give your skin the extra protection it needs during winter. Skin is naturally sensitive this time of year so avoid shaving just before going outside as this may further irritate skin.

Oily

Temper your routine to avoid soap and other harsh cleansers etc as even oily skin can have dry patches (nose, eyes, and eyebrows). If you over wash or use products that are too harsh it will encourage your skin to compensate with more sebum production - which could lead to breakouts. Use a moisturiser designed for oily skin on any dry areas.
